What is "b-roll footage"? I heard this term used and am now curious to know what it is. Thanks in advance.

B-roll is video that is not an interview. It's also known as wallpaper video. It is the video shown when a reporter's voice is heard during their story.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies.

So, when is b-roll footage taken? Is it captured as part of the primary footage of the story? Or is there a stock (a library if you will) of footage that can be plugged into the main edit? For example a story about speed limits around school zones may have footage of a crossing guard pulled from a library of common/generic scenes.

Usually it is shot the same day, but a lot of times there may be "file" footage that was shot a while ago that will be used. Just depends on story and available crews to shoot that day.
